Identifying Types of Corrosion

Different types of corrosion in pipe systems, their identification and remediation using GEBO products.

  • Brown discoloration on pipe
  • Rust blisters under the surface
  • Pitting corrosion (small deep holes)
  • Verdigris on copper pipes
  • Surface material degradation
  • Brown water when first turned on
  • Oxygen exposure on unprotected metal surfaces
  • Contact corrosion (different metals in contact)
  • Crevice corrosion in threaded connections
  • Aggressive water (low pH)
  • Stagnation (standing water)
  • Missing or damaged galvanization
  1. 1Visual inspection of pipe surface
  2. 2Material identification (magnet test, color)
  3. 3Check for contact between different metals
  4. 4Water analysis (pH, conductivity, chloride)
  5. 5Pressure test for tightness
  6. 6Remove pipe section and measure wall thickness
  • Replace corroded pipe section with GEBO clamp connectors
  • Repair clamp (GEBO Unifix) for localized corrosion damage
  • Contact corrosion: material transition with GEBO brass connectors
  • Geboliquid for micro-leaks caused by corrosion
  • Address systemic causes (water treatment, material selection)
  • No direct copper-steel connections (always use brass in between)
  • Avoid stagnation
  • Comply with VDI 2035 for heating water
  • Use only approved materials in drinking water applications
  • Regular visual inspection
